Zeitgeist of Today

Vintage

Vintage clothing has become a new trend within the industry. Many individuals now desire items from a different decade. This goes hand and hand with the sustainability movement. Consumers are looking to the past for garments and purchase these items from thrift stores or resale websites. This trend is unique in how it shows consumers’ desire for unique and one-of-a-kind items that are no longer for sale from the original retailer/designer. We now see designers looking back into their fashion house archives for inspiration for this vintage trend.

FENDI FW 2022

Creative director and designer of Fendi, Kim Jones, releases this fall 2022 collection stating "It's a wardrobe designed for every aspect of a woman's life, for every generation". (Tashjian, 2022)

This collection pulled inspiration from Fendi's archive and specifically Karl Lagerfeld's 1986 spring collection. Jones pulled the silhouettes, color palettes, textiles, and prints from the collection and reimagined in to fit the current vintage trend.

Gender Neutrality

Inclusivity and gender neutrality are big social movements within the fashion industry. Designers are beginning to create silhouettes that can flatter any body. This creates garments that remove gender stereotypes and create an inclusive environment. By creating designs with both genders in mind it allows the designer to reimagine classic staple items.

Tanner Fletcher SS 2022

Tanner Fletcher pulled a lot of inspiration for this collection '60 and '70s looks and redesigned iconic styles to fit his gender agnostic brand. I believe Fletcher is trying to point out how gender fluidity in clothing during the '60 did not exist. Therefore this collection it taking older styles and creating gender neutrality.

Sustainability

Sustainability has been a large social movement for several years now and continues to push the fashion industry towards improvements. The fashion industry has a negative reputation for unethical practices through design and manufacturing. Many designers are acknowledging this issue and making changes to become eco-friendly.

Chloe SS 2022

Designer Gabriella Hearst designed this spring 2022 collection with ethical and sustainability practices at the forefront. The designer states that "luxury fashion has become over-industrialized" (Vogue,2022). This collection aims to deindustrialize high fashion by incorporating independent artisans and recycled materials, as wells as low-impact materials.

Fashion of The Future

The importance of incorporating vintage, sustainability, and gender neutrality/inclusivity will stand for many years to come. We are a progressive society that values social change and the fashion industry is one of the biggest industries that can incorporate these changes. It consumer’s and designers’ responsibility to be aware of progress and implement eco-friendly practices. Successful brands must be open to implementing current zeitgeists in order to remain positive and productive.
